With no family or close friends, he frequents cancer and disease support groups as a way to bond with others, pretending to be terminally ill or feigning various other infirmities to fit in. Sick of his dead end, white bread, white collar corporate career and disgusted with the empty consumer culture that his generation has been doomed to inherit, he and a very devious friend named Tyler Durden create a new club where young men come to relieve their frustrations by beating each other to a pulp. The popularity of this club grows exponentially, and eventually some very profound rules are created to govern it. Because one of those rules is no more than 50 people to a fight club, soon new fight clubs are popping up everywhere and spread across the nation. Tyler Durden, the fight club's founder, quickly becomes a cult hero of epic proportions, a new messiah for a dead generation. While all this is happening, the nameless, narrating main character manages to get involved in a love triangle with Tyler and a girl named Marla who seems to have an endless supply of ex-boyfriends just as screwed up as he is. |

Though it will always be remembered as the movie featuring the "other" Hannibal Lecter, Michael Mann's 1986 thriller Manhunter is nearly as good as The Silence of the Lambs, and in some respects it's arguably even better. Based on Thomas Harris's novel Red Dragon, which introduced the world to the nefarious killer Hannibal "the Cannibal" Lecter, the film stars William Petersen (giving a suitably brooding performance) as ex-FBI agent Will Graham, who is coaxed out of semiretirement to track down a serial killer who has thwarted the authorities at every turn. |

They had "the world on a string." Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop, known as "The Rat Pack," set the style and the pace for 1950s America as the nation roller-coastered its way toward the swinging '60s.
The pack makes Vegas their kingdom with Frank and the boys ruling generously - a private corner of America, where anything goes. This safe haven proves invaluable to entertainers, politicians and the Mob, all of whom share restaurants, bars, cocktails...and more. But when President Kennedy, newly elected with the support of the pack, is advised that the friends who made him shouldn't be the friends he keeps, the guys soon discover that Lady Luck has chosen another partner. As America sips one last martini before flipping to The Beatles; as Marilyn Monroe ceases to be a living legend; and as Attorney General Robert Kennedy begins a crackdown on mob ties in Vegas, the Rat Pack's world on a string is cut loose and drifting slowly out of their hands. |

A visual knockout, Titan A.E. is an ambitious animated feature that combines traditional animations, computer-generated imagery, and special effects in the service of a science fiction adventure plotted with narrative conventions familiar from Star Wars and Star Trek. Credit directors Don Bluth (An American Tail, The Secret of NIMH, Anastasia) and Gary Goldman with crafting a vivid, convincing look to this deep space saga, which conjures some stunning images. A tense opening sequence climaxing in the destruction of Earth, a watery planet where delicate but deadly hydrogen trees float, joyriding in a starship while pursued by playful "space angels," and a nerve-wracking journey through a lethal maze of massive ice crystals each qualify as mesmerizing sequences in any film context. |

Party animal Tommy Callahan (Chris Farley) is definitely a few cans short of a six pack. But after seven years, Tommys finally earned his diploma -- and a cushy job at Callahan Auto Parts. Returning home, Tommy gets some more great news: his dad (Brian Dennehy) is marrying a real "10" (Bo Derek), and Tommy will get the stepbrother (Rob Lowe) he always wanted. Awesome!
But as fast as you can say "Who killed the keg?," the family business starts tanking. Now Tommys got to hit the road with his dads right-hand man, a smug numbers-cruncher (David Spade). And what these two dont know about salesmanship could fill a book -- and a riotously funny movie! Saturday Night Live stars Farley and Spade "take off like rockets" (Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times) in a road comedy where every turn leads to laughter. Ask for it by name: Tommy Boy. |

Steve Prefontaine was a champion's champion, holder of every American distance-running record from 2,000 to 10,000 meters. Fans elevated him to rock star status. Athletes were inspired by him. Off the track, officials mired in outdated politics got the point that activist Pre was taking the sport into a new era. The short life and fast times of the fiery Oregon distance runner form a movie that "belongs in the company of Jim Thorpe: All American and Chariots Of Fire" (Jack Mathews, Newsday). Billy Crudup, uncannily resembling the real-life Pre, and Donald Sutherland, as coach and mentor Bill Bowerman, give strong portrayals of lives aflame with conviction. Infused with track-saavy authenticity by Director Robert Towne and his co-writer Kenny Moore (Prefontaine's friend and a former world-class runner), Without Limits comes home a winnner. |

Living lives that scare most humans lacking the "X-factor" (a special power such as telekinesis), they fight over changing the general population into mutants. Leading a group of four powerful X Men (and women) to rescue one lost girl (the mutant Rogue, played by Anna Paquin)--and the entire population of New York--Xavier recruits a new member to their group: Logan (Hugh Jackman), better known as Wolverine, joins the team with much reluctance, only to prove very valuable to the rescue effort. |
